Gardeners Petts Wood Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Petts Wood is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by managing health and safety risks in a sensible, practical and proactive way.
This Health and Safety Policy outlines our approach to managing risks associated with gardening work, the responsibilities of our team members, and the standards of behaviour and practice we expect on every job we undertake.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary health and safety objectives are to:
Identify, assess and control the risks arising from our gardening and maintenance activities. Provide and maintain safe equipment, tools and plant. Ensure all employees are competent to carry out their work and receive appropriate information, instruction and training. Prevent accidents, injuries and occupational ill health so far as is reasonably practicable. Maintain safe systems of work and safe arrangements for the use, handling and storage of materials and substances. Continuously review and improve our health and safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Petts Wood has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and reviewed regularly. Management will:
Provide clear leadership and commitment to health and safety. Ensure that risk assessments are carried out and reviewed for all key activities. Supply appropriate tools, machinery and personal protective equipment and ensure that these are maintained and replaced when necessary. Arrange for relevant training, supervision and information so staff can perform their duties safely. Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and implement corrective actions. Review this policy periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our activities or relevant regulations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and contractor working on behalf of Gardeners Petts Wood has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff are expected to:
Follow the health and safety procedures and safe working practices provided. Use equipment, machinery and protective gear correctly and report defects immediately. Co operate with management in implementing this policy and any related procedures. Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards as soon as possible. Avoid horseplay, misuse of equipment, or any behaviour that could endanger themselves or others. Attend health and safety briefings and training as required.
Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work
Before undertaking tasks, Gardeners Petts Wood will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments to identify potential hazards and the measures needed to control them. Typical activities assessed include lawn mowing, hedge cutting, tree and shrub work, weed control, use of power tools, waste handling and the movement of vehicles and machinery.
Safe systems of work will be developed based on these assessments, covering matters such as exclusion zones, safe distances, use of guards, manual handling techniques, safe lifting, and traffic management on site. These systems will be communicated to staff and reviewed regularly.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
We recognise that gardening and grounds maintenance often involve the use of powered machinery, sharp tools and mechanical equipment. Gardeners Petts Wood will ensure that:
All machinery and tools are suitable for the task, maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Guards, safety devices and emergency stops are fitted where required and never removed or bypassed. Only trained and authorised staff use powered equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws and blowers. Equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Machinery is switched off, isolated and stored safely when not in use.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and used. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing, helmets and respiratory protection, depending on the task.
Employees are required to use personal protective equipment as instructed, to take reasonable care of it, and to report any damage or loss so that replacements can be provided.
Hazardous Substances and Materials
The use, storage and disposal of products such as fuels, oils, cleaning agents and any plant protection products will be managed carefully. Where such substances are used, Gardeners Petts Wood will:
Obtain and follow safety data sheets and carry out appropriate assessments. Store substances securely and in suitable containers. Ensure staff are trained in safe handling and any required protective equipment. Avoid unnecessary use and ensure safe, legal disposal of waste and residues.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening work often includes lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal problems, we will:
Plan work to minimise heavy or awkward manual handling wherever possible. Provide appropriate tools, lifting aids or mechanical assistance when practicable. Train staff in safe lifting techniques and good posture. Encourage regular breaks and rotation of tasks to avoid overuse injuries.
Working Environment and Public Safety
We will take steps to ensure that our work does not create unreasonable risks for clients, neighbours, visitors or other members of the public. This includes:
Setting up safe working areas and, where necessary, barriers or warning signs. Managing cables, hoses and equipment to reduce trip hazards. Controlling noise, dust and debris so far as reasonably practicable. Leaving work areas in a tidy and safe condition at the end of each visit.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Gardeners Petts Wood will provide initial and refresher training on relevant health and safety topics, including safe use of equipment, hazard awareness and emergency procedures. We encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters so that concerns, suggestions and improvements can be raised and considered.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses will be recorded and, where appropriate, investigated to identify causes and prevent recurrence. Staff will be made aware of what to do in an emergency, including first aid arrangements, fire safety, spill response and how to summon further assistance when needed.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable, effective and aligned with our working practices and current legal requirements. Gardeners Petts Wood is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety and to promoting a positive safety culture throughout the organisation.
